The Third Soldier Holds His Thigh

  • The Jericho Arts Centre 1675 Discovery Street Vancouver, BC, V6R 4K5 Canada (map)

In October 1980 a daring new play opened at the National Theatre: Howard Brenton's The Romans in Britain. News of its graphic, visceral nature soon had conservative-activist Mary Whitehouse up in arms.

On December 19 1980, the production's director, Michael Bogdanov was served a legal writ accusing him of having "procured an act of gross indecency by [cast members]Peter Sproule with Greg Hicks on the stage of the Olivier Theatre" contrary to the Sexual Offences Act of 1956.

This is the story of what happened next.
